Alternate Routes Program

Since the 2006/2007 school year, Clean Teens has provided Ann Arbor students, parents, and school administrators with the Alternative Routes substance abuse prevention program. During the 2009/10 school year, Clean Teens will continue prevention efforts and expand services to 2 high schools - Huron and Pioneer. Students that participate in the program will meet weekly for six weeks, attending one-hour youth group education sessions that discuss factors that lead to substance use/abuse and examine the physical, psychological and legal consequences that derive from alcohol and other drug use.

To Enroll A student in the Alternate Routes Program...

the high schoolstudent must; (1) be enrolled as a student at either Huron or Pioneer high school; (2) have a complete program referral form submitted to Clean Teens; and (3) agreed to complete the programs anonymous pre and post tests.

    Students on Alcohol Prevention

Students on Alcohol Prevention (SOAP) is a grassroots school- and community-based volunteer group of high school students (14 t o18 years of age) working to build upon youth and adult relationships to teach, learn, and take action steps to reduce underage drinking. By creating youth and adult partnerships, the program targets both youth and adults. Program components include:

    • Challenging the roles and the power that characterize typical youth-adult relationships. Ideally this means that both youth and adults will avoid hierarchical relationships in which adults act as the authority and youth hold inferior positions. Youth and adults are both appreciated as having unique and valuable contributions to the partnership.

    • Mastering competencies that youth and adults need for successful partnerships; communication, teamwork, and coaching. These three areas are important not only to the functioning of the partnership but are useful for both youth and adults in other areas of life including school, jobs, and social situations.

    • Development of a plan for community action. This may involve a change in community services provided by youth, development of a new project, or increased youth involvement in community decision-making. Youth-adult partnerships are built on the assumption of cooperation with a common goal in mind, working to reduce underage drinking.

    How it Works
SOAP members have shown that youth can benefit from partnerships with adults when both are seen as individuals who are competent and able to contribute to important decisions that impact their communities. The group’s past prevention activities are associated with increasing; (1) community awareness of the problem, (2) strong communication skills and leadership, and (3) stature in youth-led initiatives in the community. This cooperative prevention framework can deliver the following benefits:

    • Fresh, new ideas,
    • New perspectives on decision-making, including more relevant information about the needs and interests of youth,
    • Create dialogues where open and honest communication can take place about prevention
    • Additional human resources due to the sharing of responsibilities between youth and adults,
    • Greater willingness to accept the services and messages of the program,
    • Greater credibility of the program.

Students on Alcohol Prevention (SOAP) is the outcome of the collaborative partnership between Clean Teens, Huron student and parent volunteers, Michigan Coalition to Redue Underage Drinking, and the Ann Arbor School District Administration. - Thank you Dr. Williams
